Tokyo Marui's Z System has become one of the largest gas-blowback ecosystems in airsoft. It began with the M4A1 MWS, but MWS, Z System and “Marui compatible” now appear on rifles made by Double Eagle, Guns Modify, CYMA, EMG and multiple conversion-kit brands.
Those labels do not always mean the same thing. A Double Eagle Noveske N4 and a CYMA Noveske N4 can look almost identical while using different internal mechanisms. A part advertised for MWS may drop into one rifle, require fitting in another, or be completely incompatible with its trigger box and bolt.
This guide explains what the Z System actually is, which replicas use it, what third-party manufacturers change over the original Marui design and how to distinguish a technical improvement from a different material, power level or external style.
Z System, ZET and MWS are not the same term
Tokyo Marui officially calls the mechanism the Z-System and expands the name as Z Endurance Technology. Search results, retailers and catalogues also call it Z System—the term used throughout this guide—or ZET System. All of these names refer to the device developed to protect the bolt catch when the bolt locks open.
MWS is the name of Tokyo Marui's M4A1 Modular Weapon System and, by extension, the whole GBBR architecture: magazines, nozzle, bolt assembly, trigger box, hop-up and internal dimensions. In everyday market language, “MWS platform” describes the ecosystem rather than the small Z System component alone.
A precise use of the terms is:
- Z System: the bolt-catch protection mechanism; it may also appear as Z-System or ZET System.
- Tokyo Marui MWS: the complete GBBR platform that introduced it.
- MWS compatible: a replica or component based on Marui dimensions, with compatibility that must still be checked part by part.
- MWS derived: a system that keeps some architecture but replaces complete assemblies with proprietary designs.
What problem the Z System solves
After the last BB, a GBBR's bolt catch stops the bolt and holds it open. In a conventional design, the closing bolt can place its impact directly on the catch. Repetition wears the contact edge, rounds the part or eventually prevents reliable lock-back.
Tokyo Marui explains that the Z System receives and dampens the bolt's impact instead of making the bolt catch absorb it directly. It is not a power or recoil upgrade. Its purpose is to preserve last-round lock-back and reduce wear at that interface.
The Z System component is therefore not “the entire gas system”. Gas efficiency, cycling and recoil also depend on the nozzle, piston, bolt-carrier mass, return spring, buffer and magazine.
The other improvements introduced with M4A1 MWS
MWS succeeded because several coordinated features surround the Z System:
- Two-piece rear bolt construction: distributes mass and improves service access.
- Piston absorber: reduces impact on the piston area during cycling.
- Friction-relief bolt roller: reduces load and friction on the trigger sear.
- Barrel clamp: keeps the outer barrel centred and resists recoil-induced loosening.
- Approximately 19 mm piston: drives a full-stroke bolt and produces blowback.
- Aluminium magazine: Marui highlights its thermal conductivity, helping it recover temperature after filling.
- Takedown-access hop dial: keeps the adjustment protected, although it is not the quickest solution available.
These choices prioritise balance, efficiency and operation with the moderate-pressure gases specified by Tokyo Marui. A heavier steel component or higher gas pressure may create more felt recoil without improving that balance.
Which Tokyo Marui replicas use Z System
Tokyo Marui's AR family shares the MWS core and Z System. Length, controls, handguards and furniture change, but the operating system remains the same.

Official pages for the M4A1 MWS, CQBR Block 1, Mk18 Mod.1 and URG-I 11.5 explicitly describe the Z System and the same bolt-protection features.
The fixed- and folding-stock Type 89 rifles need a separate note. Tokyo Marui uses a Type 89-specific version of the Z System and allows the M4A1 MWS magazine, but the rifle is not an internal M4 or an AR receiver compatible with every MWS part. It shares the bolt-stop principle and magazine, not the complete catalogue.
Which manufacturers use or derive the MWS system
The current market falls into four broad groups.
Close MWS clones using the Z System
Double Eagle makes rifles that reproduce the MWS architecture and advertise Tokyo Marui Z System magazine compatibility. They include the EMG Noveske N4 MWS Gen 3 G101, N4 Ghetto Blaster variants, G106 AR-15s, Aeroknox AX//15 and Daniel Defense MK18/M4A1 MWS rifles. Availability changes by market, so system name and actual OEM matter more than the external licence.
Complete MWS rifles with reinforced components
Guns Modify builds complete MWS rifles using the Z System with its own trigger boxes, nozzles, bolts and hop units. EVO generations may use steel fire-control parts and newer models can include an adjustable nozzle or NPAS. AR models retain broad MWS compatibility, while a SCAR or major conversion may only retain part of it.
Derived systems rather than exact clones
CYMA calls its architecture CGS, CYMA Gas System, developed with SP System/T8. CYMA claims broad MWS compatibility but also identifies a patented trigger box, steel bolt and nozzle, proprietary QD hop unit and dedicated recoil piston. CGS is an MWS-derived branch rather than a part-for-part copy of Marui Z System.
Conversions using selected MWS assemblies
MCX, SCAR, PCC and receiver kits may accept an MWS magazine, nozzle or trigger box. Their place in the ecosystem does not guarantee external compatibility or an interchangeable bolt. Guns Modify's SCAR-L, for example, advertises Z System internals and partial compatibility: the nozzle follows MWS dimensions while the complete bolt assembly is specific to the SCAR.
The Noveske N4 trap: Double Eagle versus CYMA
“EMG Noveske N4” describes the licence and appearance, not one mechanism. Check the OEM and product reference before buying.

EMG describes the Double Eagle N4 as using the Tokyo Marui MWS system. A different EMG page describes the CYMA N4 as CGS and says it is compatible with most MWS parts. The difference between “uses the system” and “compatible with most” matters: never assume trigger box, bolt, nozzle and hop unit interchangeability without an explicit reference.
What the Double Eagle Noveske N4 improves over Marui
Double Eagle is not merely a cheaper MWS with a different logo. It changes materials, intended gas pressure and external configuration. Some differences are practical advantages for European buyers; others are trade-offs.

Genuine Double Eagle advantages
Modern external configuration: licensed Noveske markings, a short front end, 14 mm CCW muzzle thread and M-LOK handguard avoid immediately buying a receiver or rail conversion.
Intended green-gas use: distributors specify green gas directly. This better matches European supply than a rifle whose manufacturer specifies lower-pressure Japanese gases.
Steel fire-control and locking components: the European N4 technical description highlights steel trigger-box components and bolt-locking plate. That can be useful at higher pressure when hardness, fit and lubrication remain properly coordinated.
Lower-cost access to the ecosystem: it normally opens the MWS magazine and aftermarket catalogue without first buying a Marui and replacing its exterior to create a short N4.
What Double Eagle does not automatically improve
Not every reference includes an NPAS: higher output does not mean adjustable output. A retailer offering NPAS may be selling an additional installation service.
The standard hop is not automatically TDC: some shops offer a TDC nub or replacement chamber as optional work. Those options should not be credited to the stock rifle.
Steel does not always mean greater reliability: extra hardness or mass can transfer wear, demand more gas or cycle worse in cold weather. Original MWS materials and mass are designed as a coordinated assembly.
Compatibility does not mean identical tolerances: magazines, feed lips, gas routers, nozzle and magwell need to work together. Test feeding, height and sealing before repeatedly firing mixed-brand components.
Marui retains specific advantages: declared Cerakote finish, complete official documentation, factory calibration and a stable diagnostic baseline. More steel and power do not automatically replace consistency.
What CYMA CGS changes over Marui
CGS makes deeper changes than Double Eagle. CYMA advertises:
- Patented CGS trigger box.
- Steel bolt and nozzle.
- Quick-detach hop unit for easier adjustment and maintenance.
- Aluminium buffer tube with a hard-kick recoil piston.
- Green gas and 134a operation.
- 30-round magazines that the manufacturer describes as MWS compatible.
The QD hop unit is the clearest functional improvement over Marui's internal dial because it simplifies adjustment and service. The steel bolt and recoil assembly aim for stronger impulse but add mass and gas demand. A proprietary trigger box may be durable while reducing the main reason to buy MWS: access to any Marui core part.
CGS is therefore best described as MWS derived. CYMA claims broad compatibility while its own catalogue identifies different patented assemblies. Buy it expecting CGS spares for the core and MWS parts only where the exact reference confirms them.
What Guns Modify changes over Marui
Guns Modify targets buyers who would upgrade an MWS immediately. Recent EVO configurations may combine:
- Trigger box with steel fire-control parts.
- Adjustable or two-stage trigger depending on model.
- Reinforced bolt and nozzle.
- NPAS or adjustable-power nozzle on explicitly listed references.
- Proprietary hop unit and ambidextrous controls on selected bodies.
- 35-round MWS-compatible magazines.
The advantage is a coordinated aftermarket package assembled from the start. The disadvantages are price, complexity and the need to identify the exact generation. “Guns Modify MWS” is not enough information for a replacement nozzle: EVO generation, trigger-box version, bolt type and receiver still matter.
Compatibility: what is commonly shared and what needs checking
There is no universal compatibility percentage. Treat this matrix as a purchasing test rather than permission to install unmeasured parts.

Before ordering an upgrade, record manufacturer, product code, generation, magazine type and bolt/nozzle version. A shop listing only “for MWS” does not provide enough information for CGS or a conversion platform.
Upgrades that make sense—and upgrades that can make it worse
An MWS or clone that feeds, locks back and meets field energy does not need a preventative rebuild.
Power control
An NPAS is useful when energy varies too much with temperature and gas or exceeds the field limit. It must match the exact nozzle and be verified with a chronograph and game-weight BB. It is a control device, not simply a power increase.
Hop for heavier BBs
A different nub, arm or chamber can help when the standard assembly cannot lift the selected BB consistently. Replacing barrel, bucking, arm and chamber together makes it difficult to identify which part solved—or introduced—the problem.
Nozzle return spring
This becomes an important wear item as pressure or cycling demand increases, but replicas do not all share the same length and attachment. Replace it for a documented need with an explicitly compatible reference, not because every “reinforced” spring is better.
Bolt, buffer and recoil spring
A heavy bolt increases felt recoil and gas consumption. A light bolt cycles faster and tolerates cold better but reduces impulse. Buffer and spring need to match that mass; extreme combinations can cause bolt bounce, feeding faults or failed lock-back.
Steel trigger box
It can make sense in a high-pressure build or as a replacement for worn parts. In a correctly operating stock Marui, replacing the complete fire-control group adds cost and new tolerances without guaranteeing a useful improvement.
Choosing between Marui, Double Eagle, CGS and Guns Modify
Tokyo Marui MWS remains the reference for coordinated operation, documentation, efficiency and a known baseline. It is the easiest to diagnose because its starting configuration is standardised.
Double Eagle MWS offers strong value and a modern exterior. The Noveske N4 makes sense when you already want a short M-LOK rifle and accept checking magazines, power and unit-specific finish.
CYMA CGS appeals when the QD hop, steel assemblies and stronger recoil matter, provided you understand that its core is not an exact Marui Z System and some spares must be CGS specific.
Guns Modify suits a buyer who planned to install a premium trigger, nozzle, bolt and controls from the start. You pay for an advanced assembled configuration but must document its exact generation.
Final verdict
The Z System is not a generic label for every gas M4. It is Tokyo Marui's method of unloading bolt impact from the bolt catch. MWS is the complete platform built around it, and its success has created close clones, reinforced evolutions and derived systems.
Double Eagle stays relatively close to the original MWS and Z System while adding modern externals, steel components and green-gas configuration. CYMA CGS changes trigger box, bolt, nozzle and hop, bringing different improvements at the cost of less universal compatibility. Guns Modify turns the concept into a factory-assembled aftermarket MWS.
The best system is not the one containing the most steel. It is the one that preserves feeding, sealing, cycling, lock-back and stable energy with the gas and temperature found at your field.
