Tokyo Marui M4A1 MWS operating and maintenance guide

The MWS uses the Z System to reduce wear at the bolt catch. Its piston absorber, friction-reducing bolt roller and barrel clamping arrangement are platform-specific details worth checking before buying replacement parts.

Safety before handling

• Wear suitable airsoft eye protection and make sure everyone in the area does the same.
• Keep the muzzle in a safe direction and your finger away from the trigger.
• Select SAFE, remove the magazine and fit the muzzle protector when not firing.
• A BB may remain chambered after the magazine has been removed.
• Do not force the selector: SAFE may be unavailable until the hammer is cocked.
• Do not use the forward assist to force the bolt closed. It is decorative on this replica and may damage the bolt or nozzle.
• Never use or store gas containers and magazines above 40 °C or near fire.

Tokyo Marui classifies this Japanese-market product for users aged 18 and over. You must also follow local law and the limits set by your field.

Prepare the magazine

Load BBs

1. Remove the magazine from the replica.
2. Fill the loading tube with clean, high-quality BBs.
3. Support the heavy magazine and push BBs through the feed lips with the loading rod.
4. Do not exceed 35 BBs and never force a jammed follower.

The factory reference is 6 mm, 0.20–0.25 g ammunition. Other weights require a fresh hop and power check.

Fill gas

1. Keep the magazine outside the replica and away from your face.
2. Hold bottle and magazine vertically so the fill nozzle enters the valve straight.
3. Fill in short intervals and stop when the reservoir is full or gas starts escaping.
4. Let a cold magazine return naturally to roughly 20–30 °C. Warm it only with your hands; never use flame, hot water, a heater or a hair dryer.

Use gas compatible with the MWS and the ambient temperature, following the gas manufacturer's current label.

Chamber the first BB

1. Point in a safe direction and keep the selector on SAFE.
2. Insert the magazine firmly until it locks.
3. Pull the charging handle fully rearward and release it sharply. Riding it forward can leave the bolt partially open.
4. Confirm that the bolt has closed.
5. Use SEMI for initial checks and AUTO only where permitted.

The bolt should lock open after the last BB. Support the heavy magazine while releasing it, insert a loaded one and press the bolt catch to close and feed.

Adjust hop-up

1. Remove the magazine and clear the chamber.
2. Release the bolt if it is locked open.
3. Hinge the upper receiver as described below.
4. Turn the dial a few clicks towards more hop if BBs drop early, or less hop if they climb.
5. Never force the dial past either stop.

Test several shots after every small adjustment using your normal BB weight, then re-check muzzle energy.

Unload and store

1. Keep the replica aimed safely.
2. Finish the remaining BBs in a controlled setting or remove the magazine and visually inspect the chamber.
3. Support and remove the magazine.
4. Close the bolt using the manual's procedure and do not force the selector if SAFE is unavailable with the hammer released.
5. Fit the muzzle protector and store replica and magazines securely.

Follow the gas and seal manufacturer's storage guidance. Do not leave magazines over-pressurised or ignore developing leaks.

Basic field strip

1. Remove magazine and BBs, fit the muzzle protector and leave the bolt forward.
2. Push the rear takedown pin from left to right until its stop; it does not need to be removed completely.
3. Hinge the upper forward slowly, keeping fingers away from the gap.
4. Withdraw the bolt carrier and charging handle together.
5. Do not dismantle further without the correct documentation, tools and experience.

During assembly, seat the charging handle correctly on the bolt carrier, slide both in without force, close the receiver and return the pin.

Barrel and chamber cleaning

• Unload, remove the magazine and reduce hop before inserting a cleaning rod.
• Use a small, clean and dry cotton patch. Avoid aggressive solvents and metal tools.
• Feed the rod gently from the muzzle with the pistol grip pointing down.
• If it binds, stop and use a smaller patch rather than forcing it.
• Repeat until patches come out clean and free of excess lubricant.

Oil in the barrel or on the hop rubber causes inconsistent flight. Remove any excess before re-adjusting hop.

Lubrication

Use only silicone lubricant suitable for airsoft seals and plastics, in very small amounts.

• Apply a very brief amount at the specified buffer and hammer contact areas.
• Keep only a light film on bolt-carrier sliding surfaces and inside the cylinder.
• Keep mineral oils and penetrating sprays away from seals, plastics, nozzle and hop rubber.

Cycle the action carefully after assembly and remove excess lubricant. Never use oil to hide unexplained resistance.

Stop firing if the fault persists. Damaged pressure parts, valves and gas-system faults should be inspected by a qualified technician. The manual notes that wear items may need inspection or replacement at around 10,000 cycles; this is a service reference rather than a guaranteed lifespan.
